What a beautiful winters day it was for the first regatta of the season up at Tin Can Bay.

MBT and BRD both had teams entered and both got into the two (2) team grand finals. We were competing in 200m races.

MBT had to compete against four (4) other teams, with only the top two (2) going through to the grand final. They powered through the first race and finished comfortably ahead of their rivals, but in the 2nd race, they were placed in the older of the three (3) boats, which for some reason had this large flag/streamers flying off the back end – it looked good, but I'm pretty sure it slowed most teams down – and as such, they finished a close third in the second race.

They’d done enough though, to get through to the grand final and although challenged with about 40m to go, they lifted and finished comfortable winners – by about 0.5 sounds, a quarter of a boat length. Well done ladies, look out DAA Nationals – here they come!!

Our BRD “motley crew” – meant in the nicest of ways – also got through to the grand final and were pipped at the post by a mere 0.12 of a second by a Sunshine Coast/Redcliffe combined team – to finish 2nd out of seven (7) teams in the event. A great effort considering our motley crew had five (5) from Maroochy Sea Serpents (a new Sunshine Coast club affiliated with BRD) and two of these ladies hadn’t paddled at a regatta before! We had five (5) MBT ladies backing up to help us out, five (5) men (all grand masters) and five (5) lady BRD sports paddlers – with coach Rick sweeping and reconfiguring the boat to suit. We improved our times each race and they’re all keen to get stuck in and go one better at the next regatta, which by the way is the 28th August at Emerald Lakes – for Lanakila.
